I love this family. They are just so pure Bluegrass/Country and so sweet. They are so multi talented, so fabulously brilliant with their instruments and harmonies, and it is just a treat.

I have been honoured with representing them, in part, in Australia, and they are just something else. Thanks again to Lindsay Marr on 2RRR for introducing me to them.

The instrumental of Sleigh Ride is a fun and happy way to start off the album, which just makes you smile, even under our masks at the moment.

I don’t know whether I am taken back to Cold Mountain, Austria or that Christmas Eve in World War I when Silent Night is played, instrumentally here. Absolutely awesome.

I have There’s A New Kid in Town with Alan Jackson, and it does pay homage to a certain Country/Californian Rock band called the Eagles…you may have heard of them….it is a beautiful version and one that the Family Sowell should be proud of.

There’s no place like home for the holidays – is so bluegrass and so joyful that you think that it was written for these guys. Al Stilman and Robert Allen wrote this back in the 50’s and the likes of Perry Como sang it….albeit a tad differently.

I have jokingly referred to them as the Bluegrass version of The Partridge Family, but it is a title also given with respect. These guys are one talented bunch They play a mixture of instrumental and vocal Christmas fare here, and they do it with soul (sowell) and great flare.

White Christmas is a gently rollicking version of the Irving Berlin/Bing classic and it is like a new coat of paint on a beautiful old house. Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree is an upbeat, beautifully harmonized fun track.

They do a mixture of traditional songs and more modern ones. They do throw in a trick….and it takes a music nut like me to pick it up, they sing a very interesting version of Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel to the tune of the hymn The Water is Wide on here….which is probably one of the best on the album.

The Little Drummer Boy is an interesting selection….it is in many ways one of the best storytelling songs of Christmas (I get that connection) but they don’t really have a drummer in the band, unless, I am forgetting something! It is hard to think of Christmas without this song!

I am hoping for a Tennessee Christmas, one day, and this Alison Krauss sounding version is just beautiful.

The Best gift of all is a great storytelling song and combines country, bluegrass and gospel beautifully.

This album is a very different Christmas album to most. It has a great mix of songs and they are all beautifully played with obvious love and joy.

I have many Christmas albums, but I don’t have a bluegrass one. This will be heavily on rotation during the Christmas season, along with Harry, James, Vince, Josh, Randy and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

The Family Sowell:

Jacob Sowell – banjo

Joshua Sowell – Guitar/mandolin/bass

Naomi Sowell – Bass

Abigail Sowell- Mandolin

John-Mark Sowell – Fiddle

Justus Sowell – Dobro

The Top 45 7″ Singles That Changed The World! – The Best Longform Vinyl Content Online

Well that little Dickens, my dear buddy, Tamworth Sister and multi Golden Guitar nominee….Allison Forbes has pulled a swifty on me…and I don’t mean Andrew….She has released a surprise single off a forthcoming album….wow!

Only Got One Road is a toe tapping and fun song with a rhythm that sticks to you like Superglue and it is hummable, singable and a little beauty. Love it.

A guy who has had a very tough year personally and professionally and not at all how he planned, has released yet another single…..with some parts reminiscent of a classic Rock and Roll song…..Ben Ransom has released Raise some Hell, off his forthcoming album. By the time we get the album, we will have heard all of the tracks! Such are times in Covid. All of the singles released so far have been very different to each other, which shows Ben’s versatality.

This came out earlier in the year but in limited release. Hold onto Me is a sensational song released by 4 times Kazzie winner from last year, Khristian Mizzi. It is a soul soothing song with a touch of class. Khristian’s music is so healing and beautiful. It is just right for the times.

Christmas Takes Me Home is a single by Allan Caswell and Michael Fix, two of Australia’s very best. This song will resonate with many people. It is a gentle, warm hug, in a time when we can’t hug each other.

Gina Timms released Another Veteran That’s Broken. Think Beccy Cole’s Broken Soldiers and this is a great companion piece. Gina has one of the biggest voices in Australian Country Music. I am very proud to call her a friend, but she has also got an amazing talent for touching our hearts with her music. This is a cracker. Watch the video too, it is fabulous.

Totally Biased Fan Review – Christmas for Cowboys – Troy Cassar-Daley

Christmas For Cowboys | JB Hi-Fi
  1. Blue Christmas
  2. Christmas For Cowboys
  3. We Want To Share Christmas With You
  4. Still Can’t Say Goodbye
  5. Let’s Make A Baby King
  6. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
  7. Please Come Home For Christmas
  8. Let It Snow
  9. Silent Night
  10. Christmas For A Broken Family (featuring Jem Cassar-Daley)

Many years ago, this Tamworth native, came across a young busker in Peel Street. Troy had the same name as my cousin, but it was not a popular name back then. I was eager to get into discussions with Indigenous folks but that was not popular back then. I stood not far away from him many years later when a bloke called Obama was elected President of the USA in Tamworth Festival Week. Officially, we met at Rooty Hill RSL and I was thrilled. His autobiography is only half finished, but it is almost there.

Troy is one of t the best country music singer/songwriters that we have ever produced in Australia. This album had to come eventually. He has a certain sensitivity, believability and soul that equate with Christmas music. He has one of the most authentic voices in Australia and as previously noted in “Country Connections”, he has a Vince Gill quality.

This 10 track album is a mixture of traditional country music songs and new songs penned by Troy and other Aussie songwriters.

It is a good balance of old and new and well loved songs. Troy has often been a guest on major Carols By Candlelight nights, so this is not a big stretch.

The songs have a country twang, or a bluesy one, both which Troy does very well.

Christmas songs are generally sung by someone who is authentic and loveable, Troy is both of those. They are also notoriously hard songs to sing. I have heard the greatest singers in the world absolutely murder them.

From my favourite Elvis Christmas song, Blue Christmas to the beautiful Christmas For A Broken Family sung and written with Troy’s very talented daughter, Jem, this is one of the best Christmas albums in years.

Christmas for Cowboys, Let’s Make a Baby King and Silent Night are all fabulous, but the whole album is fantastic.

One to put in your stocking.

Special mention to the late, great Glen Hannah who created the beautiful album cover.
