What You Love Lyrics

He told Rolling Stone ‘I quit drinking, parted ways with my longtime manager, and I started therapy. It was all happening at once,” Jinks says. “And this record’s really a turning of the page hopefully in my life.”

Thus, the Outlaw is changing the game and he’s no longer an Outlaw, though if you look closely, some of that spirit lives on.

Cody’s music is critically acclaimed and as an Independent Artist, he fought hard and smashed down some doors for others and cheered them on.

He’s not a household name here in Australia and even a lot of country music fans in America wouldn’t know him. He doesn’t get the kudos that others do.

“Everybody can look at how much everybody sells, concert prices and stuff like that. But at the end of the day, I’m a songwriter and an artist,” Jinks says. “And if that’s what you truly are, take more control of what you’re doing. You’re going to be much happier and your fans are going to get more of a pure product.”

I gather from interviews that he is quite happy just performing, writing and recording his music. He’s not really chasing the spotlight and he wants to be himself.

Pearl Aday, daughter of late singer, Meatloaf and a constant touring colleague of Cody’s, sings Faith No More’s Take this Bottle with him.

Cody starts the album with a song that complements the aforementioned duet and sets the mood. Sober Thing is a journey of self discovery and fighting the demons.

For those who expressed their disappointment about Cody changing his game, they may not take to the mellower, more reflective artist.

Frankly, I think that he has benefited as an artist and his evolving into a man of substance rather than the good time guy who slammed drinks down on stage.

His music maybe mellower but it still has depth and substance and it is far from being wishy washy.

This is his 10th studio album. He was once a singer from a totally different genre. His success in the form of sold out shows was largely based on his outlaw approach. He still looks like an Outlaw but he’s clearly chosen a different path.

The inner image is more important than the outer one, as is his wife and family.

The lyrics to Outlaws and Mustangs are interesting -particularly the line about them always coming home.

The Working Man is a very strong but tender song and arguably the best on the album.

Most of the songs contain a line that you can easily cling to, even if the song as a whole, is terrific, there is that line that just stands out.

‘woke up in the same clothes I was in last night
I’ve done it again’ from Wasted. It has a Sunday Morning Coming Down feel but offers more hope.

‘If I can make it from here to there
All I’ve got’s this prayer
All I’ve got’s this prayer’ from Always running

‘Life is tough
Words of fire
Don’t mean you do anythin’ wrong
It means you are doin’ it right’ from What you love.

These are some examples. That last one is beautifully backed by what seems like a full on orchestra. It is a good one to finish an astonishing album.
