Country classifications: Country Rock, Australian (very), Traditional with a Twist, comedy.
Benn Gunn has been entertaining the troops with his offbeat, fun, Aussie country rock for a long time. He’s unashamedly patriotic and he lives his songs.
With an unmistakable Aussie voice, he releases his long awaited EEP – (more than 4, less than 10 songs). It has been a long time between drinks but now it is here, line up those beers on the bar.
Benn paints a fabulous musical picture of our Aussie landscape and people. From coast to coast, across deserts, mountain ranges, Bush, rivers and along dirt and bitumen, this is our beloved Australia. All of the familiar Aussie symbols are there, from ANZACs, to our famous landmarks- Uluru, Sydney Harbour Bridge, etc.
Our weather – heat, drought, flood, fire, the workers, the farmers – everything is covered.
Benn can sing sweetly too, romancing the song with Every Piece of You, arguably the best song on the EEP.
For most of the tracks, mix Redgum, Eric Bogle, Jimmy Barnes and Kerry Kennedy together and a touch of James Blundell and Ben Ransom and you’ll get this album’s message and sound.
These are Australian stories but not just for Australians. Some lyrics may need to be explained to folks from overseas but I think that they will get the message. In the meantime, they can just tap their toes to the best and play some air guitar to some cool riffs. You’ll probably be laughing as you repeat – ‘hey chuck us a tinny, I am as dry as a Pomme’s bath mat’.
Down Highway One has some colourful Aussie pictures in a musical postcard. It has a rollicking melody and some only in Australia moments.
I love No Bridge in Sydney Harbour, though, technically, the rock is not in Alice Springs but close enough! It is a rippa of a song.
What would a modern Australian country song be without a Ute? Utes get a few mentions on this EEP, especially in A Ute like that. Thunder down the road with this song. All the things that my Pa reckoned that you should have in one, bar a roll of barbed wire and a calf.
There are a few songs here dedicated to the Aussie spirit and those who made the greatest sacrifice for us. Born and Bred (which honours other frontline servers too – like firemen and RFDS) Best Mates and Every Day is ANZAC day are typical of that.
This Sunburnt Country Never Let me down probably sums it all up.
This EEP is so Aussie that you can taste the pie and sauce before you eat it, see the open road and the big sky before you venture out and feel like you have loyal mates around you from the get go.
Streuth, I’ll just tip my akubra, and crack open a beer and settle in my lounge chair.
Because Boys is the new one from Rory Phillips. The little fella from Tumut is not so little anymore. This song is very apt in these times. Mental health is so important. Well done Rory.
Life is Good Today – is the debut single from James Keith. He has an album out soon which you can pre-order. This is a taste of what is to come. This is a fun summertime song. Some cool keys and riffs. One to watch!
Right girl, wrong time is from the ever evolving Route 33. This is a catchy ballad from the Queenslanders.
Somebody like you is the latest from The April family with their signature twangy guitars and Kylie girl crooning their more country style side. Always good to hear a new song from this trio.
Felicity and Josh sing Something Good in that Texas Swing style that Felicity made famous.
Talking summer, Jase Lansky gets his Jimmy Buffett/Kenny Chesney on with Beach Time. It is a nice and easy song with a relaxed groove.

Nathaniel O’Brien Fresh Faces award:
Nathaniel was a young, brilliant, beautiful human being who was taken too soon from us. Since his passing, I have named this emerging talent awards section after him. He was almost as bigger talker as Ian Burns and I.
I will list the finalists, then let you know who won the two awards – one is for a song and artist the other for an artist.

The Karl Broadie Award for The More than a song song.
This is probably my favourite award that I give out. Karl was my favourite Scot. When he passed, I met Duncan Phillips soon after, it was like Karl was sending another Scot friend out to me and he’s a talented fella too. These songs just have an extra special purpose. Karl touched a lot of people’s lives, this has been my tribute to his memory since he passed.
