This is David’s 6th album and the first in over a decade. The California based country singer/songwriter goes back to his roots with earthy country songs which are a fusion of traditional, folk and a west coast sound. Think Gram Parsons, Townes Van Zandt, The Eagles, Poco.

There’s a touch of Cajun and Tex/Mex too.

“This record is about people struggling to hold on to a little piece of stability, a little piece of normalcy, a little bit of happiness, and usually not very successfully. They’re getting washed away into the fringes and taking one last grab — ‘Maybe there’s something for me to hang onto.’ The song ‘Lonely Motel Days’ is about a guy who says, ‘I don’t really want to hold on — I want to run away from that little piece of stability I might have had. I’m giving up on that — it’s a racket. I don’t want any part of it.’ He’s got a little three-minute slice of heaven there, but it’s not going to end well for him.” Serby explains.

Serby did a lot of ‘hanging on’ during that 10 years. His mum became sick and then passed away, Covid happened and his sister was sick too. He ‘lost his way musically’ and wondered what path to take next. The ten years seemed to pass quickly, then he decided to give it a go again.

He had written some of the songs already and it was a matter of reworking some of them and writing some others about times that he endured.

A lot of the album is upbeat, even with some sad content. There are some gentle tracks like Another Chance to Dream, Is it Lonely in here and the title track.

This is a good album for the road. I can imagine tapping the dashboard and humming along with the window down.

The Jukebox is Broken is a reflection on a time lost. It has some very clever lyrics.

This is a beaut album. Hopefully it won’t take him another 10 years to produce another one.
