Totally Biased Fan Review: Road Ready – Jay Gavin

My friend, Eddie White, rarely steers me wrong – when it comes to American Country Music, especially when it comes to artists who aren’t that well known.

Jay Gavin is not a household name in Australia, and probably not in America, either.

The former Punk/Metal Rocker is a country Outlaw now and fittingly, his songs sound very much like John Prine/Kris Kristofferson.

If, like me, you are a massive fan of those two gentlemen, then you will love Jay.

Unlike Kris and John, he can be a big user of the cliche, but the spirit, sound and voice are very much like them.

If a punk rocker/ heavy metal guy wants to go country, it seems feasible that he enter the more rebellious type of country music.

There’s a touch of humour in some songs, which although John and Kris visit on occasion, veer more to Roger Miller and Townes Van Zandt.

There’s no mistaking this album for anything but country. It covers all subjects, The fiddle and banjo are used playfully at times. There’s touches of Cajun, Bluegrass, Mountain Music and flat out country.

It is a fast moving album and a well planned one, mixing fast and frantic country with the more slower, earthier songs.

Jay was named by those in the know as one of the artists to watch in 2023.

Keep the binoculars on him and watch him fly.
